Union Chemicar Co. Ltd. was founded in Osaka, Japan in 1905. The company produced Carbon Paper and Carbonless Paper for the first 70 years, moving into the Typewriter, Ink Roller and Computer Printer Ribbon market in the 1970's.
As the printer consumable market diversified in the early 1980's, Union Chemicar Co. Ltd. developed Correctable Ribbon for Word Processors and Thermal Transfer Ribbon for Barcode Printers and Plain Paper Fax Machines.
Demand for Union Chemicar Co. Ltd products grew throughout the 1980's, leading to the decision to establish a production facility in the U.K. in 1989. Union Chemicar U.K. Ltd. was created to service the growing Computer and Point-of-Sale (P.O.S.) Printer market within Europe. The close links with a major O.E.M. printer manufacturer developed in Japan were maintained when both companies opened production facilities in the U.K.
The success of the U.K. operation prompted the setting up of Union Chemicar America (for Thermal Transfer Ribbon) and Union Chemicar China (for Computer Printer Ribbon and Ink Rollers). Both operations started production in 1992.
Continued growth prompted Union Chemicar U.K. Ltd. to move to larger premises in 1996, the increased space at new, current site allowing the introduction of a Thermal Transfer Ribbon Slitting operation to run alongside the Computer Printer and P.O.S. production lines.
The first slitting machine was installed during 1997, followed by a second machine in 1998. A warehouse facility was established in the Netherlands in the same year to supply Thermal Transfer Jumbo Rolls to customers in mainland Europe. A Thermal Transfer Ribbon Slitting operation will be set up in the Netherlands Autumn 1999 to better serve existing customers and open new markets on the Continent.
